THE NEW CONTRIBUTIONS OF THE THESIS

Topic of the thesis: Factors Influencing the Usage of Internet Banking of Customers in Vietnam Commercial Banks
Major: Finance – Banking                                                 ID’s number: 62.34.02.01
PhD Student: DO THI NGOC ANH
Supervisors:    1. Assoc. Prof. PhD. Le Thi Bich Ngoc      2. PhD. Hoang Viet Trung

New contributions to the theory

Firstly, Applying Unified Theory of Acceptance and Use of Technology of Vankatest and partners (2003) with 4 factors (Performance Expectancy, Effort Expectancy, Social Influence and Facilitating Conditions) and adding two new factors “Safety/Security” and giving the definition about factors in the research model.

Secondly, from the overview of the research with the opinions of experts, trial group discussions and preliminary data analyses, research has built up the scale to measure these factors (Performance Expectancy, Effort Expectancy, Social Influence and Facilitating Conditions, safety/security , convenience, intended use, the usage level) in the research model. Difference in comparison with previous researches is to edit and supplement the observations and measure these factors (i.e. factor "social influence" has an additional observation "people on sharing social network should use Internet banking")

Thirdly, Difference of this study compared with previous researches in Vietnam (Le Thi Kim Tuyet, 2008; Le Phan Thi Dieu, 2013; Nguyen Manh Ha, Bui Thi Hai Yen, (2013)) is researching factors influencing the usage of Internet banking of two difference group of customer: not yet used, used and verify: (i) the relationship between the factors ((Performance Expectancy, Effort Expectancy, Social Influence and Facilitating Conditions, safety/security , convenience) to the intention, the level of Internet banking usage. (ii) differences in the intention/the level of Internet banking usage according to demographic factors (age, gender, income, education level, living area, Internet experience). (iii) the impact of regulatory variables (age, gender, experience the Internet) to the relationships of the factors in the model structure. This research will help the Vietnam commercial banks to have specific strategy to each market segment in order to increase the number of customers and the level of Internet banking usage, reduce costs to increase profits for the Bank.

New findings and recommendations from the results of the research.

Firstly, The thesis used linear structure model (SEM) in the research and get the results as follows: (i) with the Group of potential customers: the most powerful factor influence positively to the intention of usage is the convenience, followed by safety/security, Effort Expectancy, Facilitating Conditions, social influence, and finally Performance Expectancy. There are differences in the intention of Internet banking usage according to demographic factors (gender, age, income, education level, Internet experience, living area), in which males, young people who have Internet experienced have higher intention of usage and factors (gender, age, Internet experience) that acts to regulate the relationships of the factors in the model structure. (ii) With group of existing customers: factors that most influence positively is the convenience, followed by Effort Expectancy, Facilitating Conditions, Performance Expectancy, Social influence and ultimately safety/security. There are differences in the level of Internet banking usage according to demographic factors, in which customers who have high incomes and live in urban areas and have Internet experience have higher level of usage. Factors (gender, age, Internet experience) have an impact to regulate the relationships of factors in the model structure to the level of usage.

Secondly, from the results of the study, it can be shown that there are differences in perception of internet banking between two groups of customers: not yet used and are using Internet banking. The characteristics of demographic factors in two groups of customers have different effects to the use of Internet banking in the model structure.

Thirdly, from the differences indicated in the results of research on the influence of the factor to the intention/the level of Internet banking usage of unused/using customers, the author put forward the recommendations and practical solutions for commercial banks in the strategies of developing Internet banking service. Specifically for customers who are not yet used, the banks need to focus on marketing activities for customers to see the convenience, safety/security of the service, especially to increase the efficiency of marketing operations; the banks should focus on female customer groups, in urban area, and have older average age (> 30). For customers who are using, the banks need to focus on the marketing activities of the convenience, the Effort Expectancy of the service and especially towards the group of customers have little Internet experience, older (> 30), have a high income.
