New academic and theoretical contributions
In comparison with previous studies, the thesis analyzes the factors affecting FDI from two sides: the investment recipient side and the investee side by combining qualitative and quantitative methods.
The thesis has examined the factors affecting FDI from the EU into Vietnam on four groups of factors: resource conditions, macroeconomic , business environment and Institutions and policies from different perspectives are based on theories of foreign direct investment. To test the influencing factors, the study used the ARDL model to consider variables suitable for the context of Vietnam including: GDP growth rate, inflation rate , trade openness and labor resources.
On the part of investors, based on the theory of investment motives and the analysis of the survey, the current situation of foreign direct investment from EU enterprises in Vietnam, the thesis pointed out two main motives of the FDI enterprises are: looking for markets and looking for resources.
New findings and recommendations drawn from the research findings
Firstly, all factors have an impact on FDI from the EU into Vietnam. Specifically, the variables representing GDP growth rate, inflation rate, and trade openness have a positive effect, whereas human resources have not a positive impact on FDI from the EU into Vietnam or low cost labor is not Vietnam's advantage for EU investors. This is different from previous studies on foreign investors in Vietnam.
Secondly, with the aim of finding markets and finding resources, the thesis points out the characteristics of EU investors in Vietnam as: EU investors focus on high technology content or sustainable development projects that the country is interested in strengths. Therefore, EU countries are in line with the orientation of attracting FDI in the following years in Vietnam.
Thirdly, a number of factors that Vietnam needs to improve to attract EU investors are: the quality of human resources, the legal system, the level of science and technology, and administrative procedures. This is the basis to come up with solutions to increase FDI attraction from the EU to Vietnam in the next period.
